I have in my heart a desire to build me a new computer but, as I am 66, have fell a little out of what's hot and what's not.  I know there's some wihippersnapper that is real eager to help me assemble my dream machine.  I want it based around the Intel I7 Processor and don't really know what Mobo, memory or whatever powersupply I will need.  The disks and CD/DVD drives should even be a snap for me.  I want a good graphics card and intend on running Windows & Ultimate.  So what say ye??

well i would be the whippersnapper you're looking for.

if you could just give me a sense of how much you are looking to spend on the system i will design the best machine you can get for your money.

Thanks a lot for any assistance.  I want the core machine to be rock solid and stable.  I will always be able to upgrade the graphics card and onboard sound has come a long way.  I would like to keep the mobo, memory and processor somewhere around $500 and I do try my best to be frugle...
My present computer is an old dual core Intel running at 3.4GHZ (1.7 x2) with 2 GB memory and a Nvidia 7600GS video AGP.  The MoBo is an Abit AS8.   I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed and my Windows Experience is 4.1 so I would like to push that number somewhere around 7.

sorry for taking so long to get back to you, here's what i came up with:

Case

Mobo

CPU

RAM

GPU

HDD

DVD

PSU

Total: $903.89

i know it's a little pricey, but core i7 doesn't come cheap, $200 for the mobo, $290 for the CPU, and that's just entry level.  if the price seems too high to you i could change the CPU, Mobo, and RAM to a core i5 based system to bring costs down, it would save you an easy $150 and you could get a 4gb kit of RAM instead of the 2gb kit i had selected.

Well I may have to drag my feet a little but I think you have me on a pretty good road...   I had arrived at an I7 860 for the engine but no mobo   I still want 6 GB of memory because 2 GB won't be any good at video editing.  The graphics card and other components should be OK.   I think I'll get started assembling the components and maybe by Christmas have a kickass desktop, (for an old fart)  feel free to give me a shout at riok.bari at gmail dot c o m.   I'll probally start by buying the things that are solid like case, P/S, video card and such....There just might be a helluva sale on cpu/mobos before the christmas season....

sounds good, imo it's always best too spend a little more up front than let a few low-end components bring down the rest of your system (like my SATA 1 HDD boging down my 3.4ghz quad core CPU Cry)

hope everything goes all right for you and your new system.
